Let's Learn Together

Understanding Crepitus

Ever wondered why your knees, neck, or hips make clicking sounds when you move? It's called crepitus and, in our "Let's Learn" segment, I delve into your most common questions.

Doc, why does this happen, and should I be worried about arthritis?
— Patient

I've got answers! First, we always check for red flags:

  • Does the area feel hot and appear swollen?

  • Listen to your body: Is there sharp, catching pain during joint movement?

  • Does the joint feel unstable or prone to giving way?

  • Does it seem like the joint is under pressure, limiting movement?

If you answered "NO" to these questions, there's likely no reason to panic. You can continue your activities with confidence. Crepitus often results from tendon or muscle sliding over a bony surface. It may even improve as your body warms up.

The Solution

Safe Exercises and Warm-ups

In most cases, safe, graded-intensity exercises can alleviate crepitus. Ensure a good warm-up before aerobic exercise and incorporate mobility drills for strength training to reduce noise.

If uncertainty lingers, prioritise safety and book an evaluation with my team to ensure you're on track to living your best life.
